
Andrew B. Hammond arrived from New Brunswick, Canada, in 1872 to become a salesman for Bonner and Company, the main competitor of Worden and Company in the retail trade market. By 1877, he had become a partner in the firm which became Eddy, Hammond and Company, and later the Missoula Mercantile.
Hammond rose quickly through the ranks of Missoula business, eventually controlling most of the area’s banking, merchandising, transportation, and land development (MHS)
