2010 Preservation Award Nominations Now Open

Repair it, restore it or tear it down? Could “This Old House” be a very special place? It’s that time of year again, time to honor those who work to preserve and restore the places in our community that lend so much character to our life in Missoula. Have you or your neighbor transformed a wretch of a building to a livable wonder?

The Missoula Historic Preservation Commission is seeking nominations for the 2010 Missoula Historic Preservation Awards. According to Missoula’s Historic Preservation Officer, Philip Maechling, nominations must be submitted for the 2010 Preservation Awards program by Monday March 1st at 5:00 p.m. “This is an opportunity to say thanks,” said Maechling,” to those responsible for restoring an old house, for designing an addition that is compatible with the historic character of the neighborhood, for painting projects that emphasize the historic architectural elements of a home, or for contributing to community preservation as an individual or group. Such recognition has been shown to help inspire new projects that continue to make Missoula a “Preserve America” community.” The 20th Annual Missoula Historic Preservation Awards are judged by the Missoula Historic Preservation Commission, with the awards given during National Historic Preservation Month, May, 2010. Projects must have been completed in, 2007, 2008 or 2009. Categories include:

Historic Preservation Ordinance - DRAFT

The Missoula Historic Preservation Commission, in consultation with the Historic Preservation Officer and the University of Montana Law School Land Use Clinic, has drafted an Historic Preservation Ordinance.  The purpose of the ordinance is to promote and safeguard the historic integrity of Missoula’s historic resources and neighborhoods, and to stimulate neighborhood revitalization. The ordinance would apply to properties currently listed in the National Register of Historic Places and properties in Missoula’s nine (9) listed and eligible National Historic Districts:  Missoula Downtown District, East Pine Street District, Northside Railroad District, Lower Rattlesnake, University of Montana, University Area, Historic Southside, McCormick Neighborhood, and Fort Missoula.

On June 15, 2009, the City Council approved sending the draft ordinance to the Missoula Consolidated Planning Board for a public hearing and its review and recommendation to the Missoula City Council which occurred on October 26. Following testimony and a presentation by the Historic Preservation Officer, the City Council referred the ordinance to the Plat, Annexation, and Zoning (PAZ) committee for further deliberations.  If you would like to comment on the ordinance, contact HPO Philip Maechling who will see that your comments are forwarded to the City Council.

Historic Bear Cage Restored

bear cageWith the assistance of 30 persons from the community and nearly 200 onlookers throughout the day, the historic bear cage in Greenough Park was restored.  Young and old alike hauled water from Rattlesnake Creek and helped patch crumbling walls and restore the aging roof, all under the tutelage of a master mason.
