2011 Historic Preservation Award Nominations

Repair it, restore it or tear it down?   Could Your Old House be a very special place?  Have you or your neighbor transformed a wretch of a building to a livable wonder?  According to Missoula’s Historic Preservation Commission Chair, Mike Monsos, nominations must be submitted for the 2011 Preservation Awards program by Tuesday March 1st at 5:00 p.m.

“This is an opportunity to say thanks,” said Monsos,” to those responsible for restoring an old house, for designing an addition that is compatible with the historic character of the neighborhood, for painting projects that emphasize the historic architectural elements of a home, or for contributing to community preservation as an individual or group. Such recognition has been shown to help inspire new projects that continue to make Missoula a ‘Preserve America’ community.”

The 20th Annual Missoula Historic Preservation Awards are judged by the Missoula Historic Preservation Commission, with the individuals and groups honored at a public catered awards event during May, the annual National Historic Preservation Month.  Projects must have been completed in 2008, 2009 or 2010.

St. Francis Xavier Historic Preservation Permit

Architect illustration

This request from the Archdiocese of Helena, Montana and the St. Francis Xavier Church, represented by Carl Posewitz of Paradigm Architects is to approve the expansion of the existing St. Francis Xavier Church and Rectory Buildings at its campus at 420 West Pine Street.

The Church is individually listed in the National Register of Historic Places (1982), and is part of and subject to Ordinance 3423, chapter 20.30 entitled, "Historic Preservation."  The purpose of the Ordinance is to promote and safeguard the historic integrity of Missoula’s historic resources and neighborhoods, and to stimulate neighborhood revitalization.

The applicant requests the HPP in order to construct a new 2255 square foot building between and connecting the Rectory building and the Sanctuary.  The new structure as proposed will contain gathering spaces and associated restrooms and an unfinished basement. The new addition is a brick-veneered rectangular building on a stone and concrete foundation with the main floor elevated by the foundation and gathering terrace to the elevation of the main floor of the Sanctuary. The roof of the addition is generally flat with a half gable on the south side and a high parapet finished with roof shingles to match the sanctuary on the north side.

On October 7, 2010, the HPC voted unanimously to accept the plan for the Addition to St. Francis Xavier Church as presented, reserving the right to comment on materials and other items along with the landscaping plan.

Historic Bear Cage Restored

bear cageWith the assistance of 30 persons from the community and nearly 200 onlookers throughout the day, the historic bear cage in Greenough Park was restored.  Young and old alike hauled water from Rattlesnake Creek and helped patch crumbling walls and restore the aging roof, all under the tutelage of a master mason.  (Photo credit: Kurt Wilson)
