THEN ~ West Main Street

West Main Street - thenWest Main Street, about 1900. The Missoula Hotel, built in 1890-1891 as the Kennedy Hotel, was one of several built in Missoula to serve travelers arriving by train. A wagon from the Missoula Transfer Wood Yard stands in front of the hotel. To the left are businesses, including a merchant tailor’s shop in the one-story building and a clothing store in the two-story building. There are more than twenty people on the street, including two children. (75-184, Chauncey Woodworth Photographs, K. Ross Toole Archives, The University of MontanaMissoula

NOW ~ West Main Street

West Main Street - NowThe Missoula Hotel remodeled in the 1920s to add a Turkish bath and telephones in every room, and converted to apartments by 1932. It has been Howard’s Apartments since 1991. The Missoula Club, to the left, has been in its present location since at least 1927; it is one of many well-known businesses located in this block, past and present. The photographer put the white pickup in the picture in the horse’s place, but had to wait over an hour for any people to populate this scene. (Photo by Kristi Hager, 2006)
